All about Ring Worm Fungus and Treatment

Unlike what the name suggests ringworm has very little to do with any worm. A ring worm fungus that infects the upper layer of our skin causes the infection. The common name of this infection comes from the characteristic ring shape the infection may form on the infected area.

Ringworm fungus is contacted through direct contact with infected people or from pets that are carriers of the disease. Using an infected person’s clothes, towel, etc. can also cause the infection. Ringworm is most likely to affect the scalp, the nails, the body, and the foot. Even classification of the fungi is based on the area it infects.

A common belief is that owning cats causes ringworm. This is incorrect. You might be infected with this fungus even if you don’t have pets at home. A red inflamed patch on the skin typically categorizes appearance of the infection with dry and scaly edges. It produces only minimal irritation and often it might not have any outward symptoms at all. The most painful scalding is usually in fungi infecting the foot. This ringworm infection is called the “Athletes’ Foot”.

Another common area for such fungi to infect is the groin. This skin infection is more common in men than in women. The fungus affects moist sweaty areas and causes severe itching sometimes. The uncommon infection is the beard ringworm since bacteria and not fungi cause most infections of skin under the beard.
