What is a Canine Ring Worm?

Canine ring worm is a common fungal infection. Canine ring worms however occur more in canine puppies than in older canines. Ringworms in canines are due to Dermatophytes, found mostly in soil. Although baby canines have greater chances of ringworm infections, other factors like lack of nutrition, greater number of animals, humid atmosphere, and insufficient quarantine period of infected animals spread ringworms among other healthy canines.

Skin lesions of ringworm infections are few in canines. Hence, diagnosis is difficult. Canines do not form rings on their skin. Canines can spread ringworms to humans through direct contact or through infectious spores in environment. Ringworm infections in canines are less common than in cats.

Treatments

Vaccinations help reduce incidence of ringworms in canines. However, it does not remove infectious spores from body of canines. Such canines can still cause ringworms to others. Effect of such vaccination lasts for around eight weeks. Hence, combining vaccination with other topical and systemic treatments can cure ringworms in canines largely. Canines need to be at least four months old for vaccinating them against ringworms.

Ringworm infections are forever present in atmosphere. Hence, maintain clean atmosphere by using strong disinfectants and antifungal chemicals on floors, beddings, and rugs. Other preventive measures to control or stop spread of ringworms is to vacuum carpets, drapes and other furnishings in hot water with detergents regularly. Clean air filters weekly to remove spores. Avoid frequent bathing of your canines. Such baths removes different skin secretions like serum and sebum making your canine more susceptible to ringworm infections.
